As some of you may or may not know, five players from the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) has filed a federal complaint against U.S. soccer on behalf of the team. Why was this complaint filed? Great question! WAGE DISCRIMINATION.
It is no surprise that females are being payed less than men and have been from the beginning of time. In 2014, female full time workers made only 79 cents for every dollar earned by men. The USWNT earn as little as 40%. Why you ask? Another great question!
Is the men’s soccer team better than the women’s? Nope! They are #29 in the world and are three time world cup champions. Hope Solo was quoted saying, “We re the best in the world.. and the USMNT. get paid more to just show up than we get paid to win major championships.”
Is it because the men’s team played more games last year? That’s a negative as well. The men’s team played 20 games while the women played 27.
It just has to be because the men’s soccer team generates more revenue, right? That’s what it always comes down to, money. Well, that too is a whooping no. The women’s team generated about TWENTY MILLION MORE in revenue last year than the men’s team.
The women’s national team was not the first to bring up this type of equality. Upon coming back from Europe after the 1960 Olympics, Track & Field star, Wilma Rudolph, was interviewed. She wanted better training opportunities for the women in the sport and said that in Europe, “girl athletes are just as important as men”. She said that in the U.S, “Only the fellows are invited to the top meets in the country while the girls are neglected.”
This discrimination is nothing new, but hopefully some change will come.
